Loofah is one of my favourite items in the bathroom. I personally use it every other day to not dry out my skin. However, I make sure to do it whenever I spend a lot of time outside to wash off all the dirt. It makes me feel much cleaner versus only using soap.

When I was younger, I usually use these plastic-like loofahs until organic options started popping out in every shop. In this article, I will show you how to choose an eco-friendly loofah that won’t be covered in mould or generate a bad smell after a while.

I will then list my favourite loofahs (yep, I used a few!) for you to choose from. Who knew there are a handful of options that are designed for specific purposes. Using a sustainable loofah is such a great addition to your eco-friendly toiletries.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR A SUSTAINABLE LOOFAH

Before you head to the shop or buy an organic loofah online, there are a few things to help you decide which one is suitable for you and what the use of it depending on the texture, shape, and design.

Material

We are all too familiar with plastic, round loofahs. While they probably do a great job, the feeling of plastic touching my skin doesn’t feel comfortable. Not to mention that this material develop a strong foul smell after a while, which then requires me to buy a new one too soon.

When choosing an eco-friendly loofah, you want something made of natural materials. The most popular ones are dried coral and sea sponge. These are nicer to your body, eco-friendlier, and easier to clean (yep, you need to clean your loofah, I will show you later how).

There is also a body scrubber made of stone. In the next part, I will explain when to use dried coral, sea sponges, and stones.

Texture, design, shape

When looking at dried coral loofah, these are often hard in texture, however, there is also the softer version that is great for people with sensitive skin. while sea sponges are really soft, however, it does take a while for them to dry. Stones are made of natural Earth lava.

For shape and design, you have a lengthy one, round ones, pads, and the one with a stick or handle attached to it.

Purpose

The lengthy one is great for people who are not very flexible or people with disability. By simple holding both ends, you can scrub your back the parts of your body that you can’t reach. This is the same purpose of the body scrubber with a handle.

Now, with dried corals, this is good for scrubbing your body, legs, feet, and arms. If these feel too rough, you can opt for the softer version. Dried corals come in different sizes, I like the big ones (about the size of my hand) to use for my body, while the small ones are great for cleaning between your fingers, toes, and behind your ears.

The sea sponges are very soft, it’s a great choice for people with sensitive skin and for scrubbing your face. We also have a list of the best argan oil face serum.

While the stone loofahs are great for your heel and feet. However, I don’t recommend you use it every day as it can make your skin on the heel thin making it hard to walk on your bare feet. Around once a month is a good schedule for scrubbing your heel.

BEST ECO-FRIENDLY LOOFAH

To the fun part – our recommended best sustainable loofah for all parts of your body. I personally tried all of them (different brands but the same style/texture/purpose).

Double-Sided Long Loofah (back)

This double-sided loofah can help you reach your back and other hard to reach areas. It is also not super rough, so it’s perfect for people with sensitive skin. The sie is about 4 x 30.75 in (10×78 cm) and has easy loop handles on both ends. Even though it is made with polyester and nylon, since it’s machine washable, there’s no need to replace it until it broke or falls apart, which takes years. It dries fast to make sure no bacteria can grow in the loofah. It comes in 3 different colours.

Egyptian Shower Loofah (body)

This is one of the most common designs or sizes for an organic body scrubber. It is made with a naturally dried sponge with no plastic or petroleum-based material. This loofah is great to use for your body, arms, and legs. My only concern with this is because of its shape and size, it won’t be suitable for scrubbing between your toes. However, it is hypoallergenic and quite thick making sure it will last for a long time.

Sea Sponge Loofah (face)

this very soft shower puff is kind to your skin which makes it suitable for your face. It is also rich in lather (foam) when wet and soaped which makes it great for bath lovers out there. It is made from an all-natural and renewable honeycomb sea world sponge. To make sure it lasts a long time, make sure to wash it with baking soda with a water solution. This will keep the bacteria from growing and vivid any nasty smell.

Loofah Complete Set

This is definitely my favourite on this list. First, because it has everything for the entire body and second, it has gloves body scrubber. I personally love hand globes for the loofah, it lets me have complete access when scrubbing my body and I don’t have to put too much pressure when scrubbing because of the complete grip.

It comes with a back scrubber, hand gloves loofah, loofah pad, nail scrubber, and soap foaming cotton sack. By the way, it also has 3 adhesive hooks.

Earth Lava Stone (feet, elbow, and hand)

After you scrub your feet with a loofah, you should also spend time scrubbing some callous off your feel and palm. But remember to not do it too often to avoid making your heel too sensitive. Using this natural East lava stone is a good choice, it will surely remove dead skins but also since it’s al;-natural, it doesn’t stink up.

Loofah Pads/Gloves (body)

The flat kind of loofah is a great choice for a body scrubber. Because of its shape, it’s easy to apply pressure on the loofah. This mean, you don’t need to buy a hard texture one instead, get a gentle and soft loofah and adjust the pressure according to your liking. Since it’s also small, it’s easy to bring it on a holiday.

Loofah with a Handle (body)

I know that some people prefer the one with a handle, not only does it allow you to reach other areas of your body, it also gives good control of the scrubber. Due to the handle, unlike other eco-friendly loofahs, this one won’t slip off your hand and fall on the ground.

Small Loofah (between fingers and toes)

This eco-friendly loofah is small and quite soft. This means that it’s the best one to use to clean between your fingers, toes, and behind your ears. It is 100% made of biodegradable material. It can degrade or compost into your fertilizer.

HOW ABOUT SCRUBBER FOR NAILS?

I know I should have added scrubber for nails, however, I couldn’t find one where mould don’t start growing on them or the bristles are so weak, they fall off easily. What I use are actually discarded toothbrushes or bamboo toothbrushes. If you want to try a used toothbrush, first, soak it in vinegar, baking soda, and warm water. Rinse properly before using.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR LOOFAH

Unless the manufacturer says you can wash your eco-friendly loofah in the washing machine, you can instead do the following:

  • vinegar, baking soda, warm water solution – soak overnight, rinse thoroughly, and dry in the sun

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s really time to ditch your plastic loofah and instead invest in a good and organic body scrubber. These ones last for a longer time and are either biodegradable or easy to recycle due to their natural materials.

I hope that you found this list of best eco-friendly loofah helpful. If use other kinds that are not on the list, let us know in the comment section below.
